Director of Media Relations

Office of Marketing and Communications

Shenandoah University is seeking a director of media relations who will be primarily responsible for managing the university’s ongoing relationships with journalists and news organizations. In addition, the director works on the SU campus to find and package compelling stories about the university and its academic mission, including noteworthy contributions of faculty, staff and students. Reporting to the University’s associate vice president for marketing and communications, the director will work to place news stories with a wide range of news organizations including international, national, electronic and regional/local media. Also, this position will produce the SUN-e, the University’s daily electronic internal publication providing news and information to faculty, staff and students.

Specific Job Tasks:

  • Build relationships with members of the media.
  • Work to support the university’s brand initiative by utilizing brand messages in communication and media relations efforts.
  • Proactively canvas the campus for stories of interest to the media.
  • Provide professional and excellent customer service to internal and external clients requesting media relations attention.
  • Create and maintain a reporting system of assessment and accountability relating to the office’s media relations activities and placement successes.
  • Produce the daily SUN-e providing daily news/announcements for faculty and staff with a special emphasis encouraging and promoting examples of the University’s brand.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and experience in reporting/working with the media.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast paced work environment with minimal supervision and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in an environment of changing time constraints and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours in accordance with the demands of the position and available for travel and evening/weekend work.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, email, internet and social media skills
